Battle Tanks - A Free Mac Application
A tank is a mobile land weapon. It is a versatile vehicle, used for a variety of purposes. They are generally armed with a main gun and machine gun. Other weapons such as anti-aircraft guns are also mounted.
Modern tanks feature heavy armour, which protects the crew. In addition, tracks improve operational mobility, making them more flexible. Tanks are capable of moving at high speeds and overcoming adverse conditions better than wheeled vehicles.
Tanks are also capable of launching a devastating attack. A fire-control system can lock onto a target tank and direct the projectile to strike it. Another feature is the ability to produce a smoke screen.
Modern battle tanks are able to detect an enemy tank from a great distance. This information is then displayed on the tank monitor.
Advanced battle tanks can also identify friendly tank units. These systems make use of radar. They can also disperse incoming shaped charges with electromagnetic armour.
The Abrams MBT, for example, has good firepower and speed. However, its fuel consumption limits its overall range.
Modern tanks are often fitted with insulating thermal sleeves, which minimise gun-firing fumes entering the crew compartment. Similarly, reactive armour can prevent incoming projectiles from striking the tank.
Other protective measures include a front metal plate that prevents precursor charges from detonating. Tanks also have gyroscopes to stabilise the main gun on short halts.
During a combat situation, troops often add improvised armour to a tank. These include camouflage painted and branch-covered tanks, as well as light wood-framed "dummy" tanks.
